Vocabulary 1

1. Expository- Intended to explain or describe something
The speaker had an expository speech which explained a lot.
2. Composition- the action of putting things together
The student's notes were written in a good composition.
3. Assuage- satisfy; make less intense
The athlete assuaged his leg when he was resting after the game.
4. Decadence- moral or cultural decline, esp. after a peak of achievement
Decadence took a role of the rich boy's life because he had no responsibility.
5. Hackneyed- lacking significance through having been overused
The joke got hackneyed when it was used too often.
6. Coalition- an alliance
The friendly nations formed a coalition against the enemy nations.
7. Transcend- be or go beyond the range or limits of
In order for the boy to become a professional football player he needs to transcend in practice.
8. Meritorious- deserving reward or praise
After the dog did a trick it was meritorious.
9. Lurid- very vivid in color
The old food changed into a lurid color.
10. Petulant- childishly sulky or bad-tempered
The spoiled kid was very petulant when he did not get his way.
