Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Perks of Being a Wallflower is a book about a person named Charlie who is a freshman in high school and is very reserved.  He is a kid that watches the world around him from a distance and inside his own little world.  The friends that he ends up making are good for him because he is very troubled and they seem to bring out the best of him because they introduce him to the real world.  I really enjoyed reading this book and understanding the perspective of people who are like that in real life.  I feel as if the author chose to write a book about this because the author wanted to make a story that would allow people who aren't like charlie to still relate to him.  The author wants to describe Charlie and his life to show people what it's like to be someone like him.  This book is very appealing to me because I can relate to Charlie in some ways.  I kept reading this book after the beginning because it is very interesting and just gets better as you read on.  This book is very realistic because there are a lot of people who are just like Charlie.  Certain scenes that happen in this book I relate to in many different ways.  I relate to the way Charlie sees the world around him and watches time and friends pass by.
The author of this book wrote about this book to let people know what it's like to be in Charlie's position.  I think the author thought to write this book to kind of give out information to people to see what it's like to be on the other side.  This book is kind of depressing in a few ways, depending on how well you can relate to it.  I don't think that the author intended this to be a very climatic or crazy book but for it to be a different.  Different in a way that shows people to be more open about life and to live it to the fullest.  Charlie and Sam are two of the main characters in this book.  Sam is a girl that Charlie has a big crush on because she is the opposite from him.  Sam seems to be a very special girl for being just average.  She has many personalities about her that Charlie is very attracted to.  They both see life in different ways but have a certain connection that meets each other half way.  Both of these characters are very important to the story because Charlie is the main character and Sam is the one who brings him into the real world.
The way the book is written is as if Charlie is telling the story from his point of view which leads into indirect characterization.  The way he talks about all of his friends is an example of indirect characterization because he describes them without even trying to.  When he talks about what the other characters say or do gives the reader a good idea of what these people would be like if we were to see them in real life.  The direct characterization plays into the story when the author talks instead of Charlie.  Especially in the beginning of the book when the author describes Charlie and his circumstances in life is a good example of direct characterization.  The author changes the diction of the story when he talks about Charlie from other character's points of views.  Charlie has his own story while the author makes another story from the other character's points of views.  Charlie has a lot of different characteristics and alter egos.  He can be angry, sad and happy which in otherwise be known as bipolar.  As the book came to an end it was as if I was losing friends because I feel as if I got to know all of these characters like I would get to know a friend in real life.  In the beginning of the story when Charlie introduces all of the people in his life, I felt as if I were meeting this people.  The way the author described these people and Charlie's point of view made me feel like I was actually there shaking the character's hands.
The author did a good job of writing this book in both a journalistic and fiction type of way.  When the book was being told by Charlie, it was a journalistic type of way because Charlie was using a printing press.  When the author was telling the story it was a fiction type of way.  The descriptions of the places that Charlie was at made this story so realistic.  I could imagine everything that the other was saying in my mind.  The conversations that the characters had with each other were so realistic because the topic of the conversations were the same topics that I have with my friends.  The author used foreshadowing to give the story tone because you could tell what was about to happen next.  You could tell what was about to happen next because towards the end of the story, you know Charlie so well that you know what he would do next.
This is a book that I will remember for a long time because it is one of the best books I have ever read.  I really enjoyed the way I could relate to the book because it was so well written.  The descriptions of the places and scenes made me feel as if I was really there with the characters.  I remember the part where Charlie got so angry and beat up some of the characters out of anger.  He couldn't control his actions because his mind kind of took over his body and the actions his body made.  I will also remember the part where Charlie and Sam had their first kiss.  The emotion behind all of the words leading up to the kiss gave me a type of emotion as if I felt like I was in Charlies position.  This book was outstanding and I recommend it to anyone who would like to read a book that you could bring to life in your mind.  I could imagine the whole book as if I was Charlie.

Banksy's Wall and Piece

Wall and Piece was a good book for being made by a graffiti artist.  Banksy is a very well-known graffiti artist with a lot of famous pieces.  This book has a lot of pictures put together of his pieces that he has done in the past with captions next to them.  A lot of his art work seems like vandalism but almost every single one of his pieces has valuable meaning and information behind it.  This book was a great way to get his point of graffiti across to the reader.  This book is solely about Banksy and the meanings behind all of his best pieces of graffiti.
Banksy made this book to show reason behind all of his graffiti.  He points out a lot of flaws in the government and talks about what he feels is right.  He feels as if his graffiti is a form of advertisement/propaganda.  It's a way of expressing his thoughts to the people through art on the streets.  There are many points that he makes through his graffiti to help open the eyes of people who don't realize some things about the government.  Not only does he point out some blind spots that the government has but he also points out some ways that people see things in life and he tries to shed some light on them.
This book was recommended to me by Dr. Preston because he knows that one of my passions is street art and that's what this book is all about.  I don't really like to read books but this book is very different from all other books.  This book appeals to me in a special way because I agree with everything that Banksy does.  When I started reading the book, I liked it right away because it has a lot of personalities to it.  This book is perfect for anyone that is into street art.  It is also good for people who want to learn more about street art or more about Banksy and why he does what he does.
This book has a lot of captions next to pictures that show information and reasons for why he did certain art pieces.  I believe that Banksy is a genius in the art industry.  He reaches out to people in so many different ways and sees life completely different from the average person.  I have learned from this book that his attitude about street art is to use propaganda to reach out to people and open people's eyes.
No one really knows who Banksy is or what he looks like.  He is anonymous to the media and probably won't ever reveal who he is.  It could be more than one person but no one will ever know for sure.  He/they are people that believe that they are heroes in their own way.  In a fictional book, they would be heroes who help people to open their eyes and see the world differently and more clear.  If I were to put Banksy into a fictional book, he would be talked about using direct characterization.  This book is all about him and the work that he does.
Banksy is worth talking about because he is so well known and his artwork is worth a lot of money.  In this book, Banksy talks about himself and gives his opinions on certain topics.  He talks about certain stories of situations that he was put in while trying to do his work and that would be an example of indirect characterization.  He talks about funny things that he has pulled and shares an email that was written to him by someone who was angry with him for doing something.  The person who wrote the email was angry and the reader can understand why because Banksy shares why the person wrote him that email.  Banksy is a static protagonist because he remains the same.  He has different personalities in his opinions but he always remains loyal to his artwork and does not change the fact that he shares his opinions openly with the public.  This book brings people to realization of who Banksy really is even though we don't know what he looks like.  After reading this book, it's as if I know who Banksy is because he shares his ideas in this book just like a friend would.
This book about Banksy was written in a journalistic style.  Everything that he talked about was based on a true story or true facts.  Most of this book felt like Banksy was interviewing himself and sharing a lot of information about himself to the reader.  While the pictures tell their own story by showing information about the place and giving an idea of what it was like to be there, Banksy talks about the action that happened their in the captions.  The pictures show great detail of the place and the artwork.  Banksy illustrates the picture even more by describing what happened at the scene.  His attitude in this book is all understood in the captions written next to the pictures of his artwork.  He shows a lot of passion in what he does and talks about his passion and opinions in the captions.
There are a few things from this book that I will remember for a long time and use to my advantage.  Some of his artwork used in the zoo opened my eyes about how sad it really is that these animals are trapped.  These animals really have no choice or freedom.  Another idea that I thought was pretty cool was how gullible people are.  He spray painted signs that said designated graffiti areas that people believed were real.  People are so used to signs made by the government that if you make one that looks like a sign that is made by the government then people will take it seriously.  This book has a lot of interesting and relatable opinions.  I recommend that anyone who is interested in street art or Banksy's artwork to read this book.  You will not regret it.

Open Source Learning
Open Source Learning has helped me grow and change the way I think.  Before this class I have only seen school as nothing more than a place that I am obligated to go to.  Now that I have taken this class, I am going to miss having the opportunity to go to this class everyday and learning new and interesting things.  This class has helped me improve my reading, writing and thinking skills by writing journal entries everyday before class starts.  The way this class is structured is much different than any other class I have taken before.  You actually get to express yourself and improve your English skills while researching things that interest you the most.  In any other class there is always a teacher that has their way of making the class and you have to do exactly what they have planned for you.  In this class you get to make up your own plan as long as there is a reasonable and achievable goal at the end of it.
In this course you have to be very self-disciplined to do your work on time so that you can contribute with the rest of the class.  This class is all about communicating with others but if you don't do your part then it is hard to share your work with others.  We have to do most of these assignments on our own time at home when we can access our computers.  On almost every assignment that is given to us, we have the choice to write about or research whatever topic we want.  We are trusted to go home and complete these assignments so that the time we have in class the next day, we can discuss what we have done.  There are many times where the majority of the class doesn't do the assignment for many different reasons.  But whatever the reason is, when hardly anyone does the assignment it is hard to discuss it because not many people will be able to contribute to the discussion.  In this class you are highly depended on and trusted to do your work so that you can discuss and contribute with the rest of the class.
This course has helped me to reconnect with a passion that drives me to achieve my goals.  That passion is expressing myself through many different forms of art.  I will continue learning by understanding myself and doing the things that I find most important and beneficial for myself.  While I'm in college next year, I will discover something that I am passionate about that I can pursue a career in.  Doing something that you love to do the most can give you a lot of motivation to keep on pushing yourself to do better and achieve more.  That's why my passion is to express myself and stay true to myself.  If I'm not happy, then I lack motivation to do anything good for myself.
The masterpiece presentations was a great way to let students express the value of what they are passionate about to the rest of the class.  Each presentation was very different from each other in one way or another.  With the wide variety of presentations, a lot of them had connections with each other.  Some of the presentations talked about photography, writing books, music, art and many other topics.  Alex had her presentation on fashion and the way people express themselves through what they wear.  Many people express themselves through the way they talk, what they wear, art, photography, music and many other ways.  Self-expression was one of the main topics that was talked about in just about everyone's presentation.  We express ourselves by doing what we love and sharing information about it to others.
Towards the middle and end of this school year I lost myself.  I lost myself due to stress and anxiety because of graduating high school.  I had a hard time focusing on myself because I was so worried about what everyone else was doing and completely stopped focusing on my own goals.  Towards the end of the school year, I came to a realization that I need to worry about myself and make sure that I do what's right for me.  I cared so much about other people that I didn't take the time to care for myself and understand myself.  I am now focusing more on setting a plan up for myself these next couple of years in college.  I will push myself to work harder than I ever have before because my biggest fear is failure.  I want to be successful and proud of my accomplishments.
